Native Son
Twenty five years to the day after being born in Matilda hospital, I have returned to the island nation of Hong Kong. Despite what the title of this entry might suggest, this journal is neither a homage to Richard Wright nor a reference to the exploration of the African-American strife that earned him so much acclaim. Instead, this blog is intended to recount both cultural observations and internal reflections throughout my experience in the homeland that I never knew. I will attempt to eschew obvious opportunities -- humorous "Engrish" translations, the dearth of "American-style" Chinese food, etc. -- and opt for authenticity whenever possible. Furthermore, if this semester is anything like previous experiences abroad, the anthropology will be holistic, meaning a duality of virtues and vices. Without further ado, welcome to Hong Kong.
